So I am going to think over the next few days about the issue most important to me and how to write correctly how I feel about it.
But until then, something a little more close to home, from class today....
About the Halloween costumes...
I completely understand that costumes that are too big, tall, etc. should not be worn. It Is our right as American students to have a proper education and someone infringing upon our right to learn, as that woman was saying, is inappropriate. However, I believe the administration completely handled this whole situation inappropriately as well as incorrectly. I believe there should have been a warning with some guidelines set first, and then if the situation was not fixed, they could go through with their master plan of no Halloween costumes.
The first step should have been to set more strct guidelines for Halloween costumes. If they would have said costumes must follow dress code and allow you as well as other students around you to learn and participate in class, I believe the reaction would not be half as bad as the backlash they are receiving now. This would eliminate huge, over the top, tall/wooden/wide/etc. costumes, as well as inappropriate ones, but still allow us the opportunity to dress up and celebrate a holiday we have celebrated for the past 18 years.
The second step would be to see how this Halloween goes, and if there were still problems with interferring with other student's right to learn, next year they should go ahead with their plan to ban dressing up on Halloween.
I am not just saying this because we are seniors and it's our last year here; I would say the same if we were juniors. I just believe a first warning would have been a more fair and mature way of dealing with the problems that came up after last year's Halloween. And that way, we would all have a warning saying, "Hey, seriously, watch it or we will take this away from you." and this may force kids to be smarter when choosing costumes so as not to ruin it for the next year.
I honestly think something more should have been done and could still be done by us students to plead our case; I know it's just Halloween, but is IS our right and if we allow this to happen, who knows what new crazy strict 'lets make fremd not fun' rules they will come up with in the future.
